Social Companionship
The Facts
A recent survey by Help the Aged suggested that more than 180,000 pensioners in the UK go
for a whole week without speaking to friends, neighbours or family. 1 in 10 say they feel
‘acutely isolated’.
In the same survey a quarter of those over the age of 75 say they are ‘more or less alone
and socialise with very few people’.
A 2001 study revealed that older people account for approximately 12% of the population,
but account for 20% of the suicides.
What is it?
Our Social Companionship services provide support in order for the service user to continue
living independently in their own home. It may be that the individual does not require any personal
care (e.g. bathing, etc.) but they may want the reassurance of a care worker for companionship reasons.
Our Objective
To provide temporary live–in care and companionship for the elderly and those convalescing
in their own homes.
How can we help?
Social companionship may cover a range of activities where we are able to provide support, for example:
- General companionship
- Accompanying to and from social activities (social clubs, cinema, etc.)
- Assistance with hobbies and leisure activities
- Holiday companionship
A key objective should be to support elderly people who
would otherwise be forced to move from a well loved home.
